Ever wondered how you are using energy? Or where does the energy go? Not happy with the bill at the end of the month? That's too late - especially if you are a large consumer like a factory. We are able to assist by providing a Hosted Energy Profiling System, or iHEPS. This is built based on the iSCADA technology, at it has been deployed in a number of large factories and shopping malls.
The goal would be to save energy and ultimately lower your monthly TNB bill. Our system provides you with real-time data and alerts. This allows the users to actively intervene and reduce consumption, if necessary. It also spots anomalies, provide energy profile and long term trending. It will provide accurate data, to help you answer these questions:
- How often do you hit your maximum demand, and what time does it happen?
- Does maximum demand happen every day at the same time?
- How much energy do you use when your factory or mall is closed?
- Are chillers turned on and off at the right time?
What is iHEPS? With the assistance from TNB, we are able to interface with the TNB meters. iHEPS will collect the consumption information (kWh) real-time. From this, we are able to calculate real-time demand, maximum demand, peak usage and off-peak energy usage. The data is collected by a iHEPS panel, installed close to the TNB meters. This iHEPS panel shall transmit the data to the iSCADA Server. The Servers are hosted, just like your Google Mai or Hotmail. The benefit is, you won't have to pay for software fees or buy a server.
Pic above; TNB staff preparing the meters to be interfaced with the iHEPS system.
To view the data, you can logon to Server, with a user name and password. We can assign unlimited users to your account. Too busy to logon? Not to worry - our system can send out alerts when 'events' happen. For example, you can set an alert to be sent if demand exceeds a predetermined value.
Why TNB Meters? TNB Meters are accurate, typically accurate to 99.5% or 99.8% for large consumers. Moreover, interfacing iHEPS to the TNB meter does not require a shutdown. Shutdown is required to install a new meter with new current transformers (CTs) on busbars.
Next step: More than monitoring, we can assist you to liaise with TNB if you qualify for further discounts on off-peak energy usage; or to change tariff (for example from C1 to C2). However, to do this effectively, decision must be made based on data.

Maximum Demand Controller |
Depending on your TNB Tariff, Maximum Demand (MD) can be as expensive as RM 38.60 per kW. Imagine - if your facility could set a target MD based on target production. This Maximum Demand Controller is based on the iSCADA platform, built with a predictive algorithm to enable you to set a target MD and work within the target. Demand is calculated every half an hour, with TNB billing for the highest peak period half-hour demand recorded for the month. This makes demand controlling dynamic, must be calculated every half-hour. It must also be predictive - that is, after shedding the intended load, the base load power (items left on at your premises) will not exceed the target. TNB Meters can only display the MD reading after the 30-minute period has ended and this information is too late for active MD control.
This predictive Maximum Demand Controller (MDC) has two key parts. When its algorithm predicts a high MD, it will automatically signal for load shedding. When demand is low, the Graphics User Interface (GUI) will provide an indication to operators to maximize output by running machines harder, if the situation permits.
Key Features & Benefits
- Predictive algorithm to minimize interruptions.
- Enables production to increase output when MD is predicted to be low. This increases productivity.
- First and second alarms available before automatic load shedding.
- Enables Production Control and Finance to budget for a target MD given a target production output.
- Controller resolution accurate to 20kWh pulse.
- iSCADA system for Energy Profiling (iHEPS) provides real-time energy and demand cost. Know your expenditure before month-end TNB bill.
- iHEPS is comparable (within 1%) to actual TNB Bill.
- Integrated with TNB Meters for accurate control. This is done with formal TNB approval prior to installation.
- Proven to control a load of 60MW, base load of 40MW to a target maximum demand of between 60MW to 90MW.
- Algorithm designed for Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) billing rules; suitable for all industrial tariffs.
The Maximum Demand Controller
A sample screen of real-time costing (above) and a detailed minute-to-minute Demand chart.
Here's an example of a poor usage of Maximum Demand (MD). The recorded MD has many peaks and throughs. TNB bills MD based on the highest peak recorded (from 0800hrs till 2200hrs) for the calendar month.
The MDC is able to turn-on loads automatically before the end of each 30-minute MD cycle. This is based on its predictive algorithm to minimize interruptions and maximize productivity. The red and green lines are the control limits while the blue line denotes real-time demand.
Requirement for MDC
For the MDC to work, the operations have load which can be shed when demand is high. Examples of possible load shedding include waste processing machines (shredders, crushers); slowing down of motors and machines, shutting down of non-critical machines; reduction in chiller power; usage of ice-making machine to reduce chiller power during peak periods.
